Elections of the
Executive Body of Thapar University Alumni Association for term 2010-2012 Elections
to the Central Executive Committee of T U Alumni Association were held on the
12th December 2009 along with Re-Union of the 30-year old
graduates “1975-79 batch” at Thapar University
Auditorium. Dr. Maneek Kumar, Professor-in-charge,
Alumni Relations conducted the elections as Returning Officer. The alumni
from many batches enthusiastically participated in the election process and
casted their votes More than 250 votes were polled. In all 19 nominations
were received, 3 were absent and ten new members were elected through secret
voting. Voting process The Returning Officer
counted the votes in the presence of the candidates and their nominees and

meeting on 2/01/2010, the following were co-opted in the new CEC:
Re-Union of the Silver Jubilee “1980-84 batch” The Thapar University Alumni Association organised Re-union of the Silver Jubilee “1980-84 batch”
function on Saturday, the 24th of October 2009 with great enthusiasm and
spirit in the University campus. The function started at 12:00 pm with the
registration process of the alumni from 1980-84 graduates and soon they were
all engaged in interaction with each other and revived their old good days
and their joy knew no bounds. Some of the alumni from this batch took tour of
the campus and in particular they enjoy their visit to the hostels. Later
after the lunch, all were also present at the time of Group photograph.
Silver Jubilee 1980-84 batch group photo After evening tea, felicitation of the alumni
from this batch started. Nearly 106
alumni from this batch, were presented to the Chief
Guest Dr. K. K. Raina, Deputy Director, T U and
each of them with his family was honoured by inviting them to the stage and
giving them memento. The photographs of the alumni of this batch at the time
of their admission in the institute were displayed through LCD projector.
Felicitation in progress Re-Union of the 30-year old graduates “1975-79
batch” The
Thapar University Alumni Association organised
Re-union of 30-year old graduates “1975-79 batch” function on Saturday, the 12th
of December 2009 in the University campus. The function started at 4:00 pm
with the registration process. After the registration process, all were also
present at the time of Group photograph. Later after evening tea,
felicitation of the alumni started. This function coincided with the Annual
General Body meet of the Association along with the elections to the Central
Executive committee of the Association. Nearly 21 alumni from this batch,were presented to the
Chief Guest Dr. K K Raina,
Deputy Director, Thapar University and each of them with his family was honoured by inviting them to the stage and giving them
a memento. The photographs of the
alumni of this batch at the time of their admission in the institute were displayed.
Felicitation in progress Family get together of 1974-78 batch The alumni from 1974-78
batch organized get together of their batch on 5th Dec., 2009 at Baikunth Resorts, Kasauli
(Himachal Pradesh), which was attended by about 30 families from this batch.
Profile of Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA)
winner-2009 Er. Jayant Davar, BE-180/84 (Mech)
also
an alumnus of Harvard Business School. As a fresh graduate from TIET, Mr. Davar did his apprenticeship at Tata motors, Pune and Piaggio, Italy. Mr. Jayant Davar is the founder and currently the Vice Chairman
& MD of Sandhar Technologies Limited, Gurgaon. The Company manufactures a range of auto
components which include locking systems, rear view mirrors, door handles,
sheet metal stampings, zinc and aluminium pressure
die cast parts, injection moulded plastic parts,
and mould & dies. The year 1985 was a watershed year in
his life as the Indian economy was opening up from its archer licence raj and many international automotive companies –
Maruti Suzuki, Hero Honda, TVS Suzuki, Bajaj
Kawasaki etc. had began setting up their manufacturing plants in India,
opening up an opportunities for the supply of high quality components.
Borrowing a small sum of money from his parents he set up a small workshop
for the supply of pressed sheet metal components to Maruti
& Hero Honda by the name SANDHAR, with just 5 people. In 1987, he grabbed
another opportunity to manufacture automotive locking systems, for which he
joined hands with Honda Locks Mfg Co – A 100% subsidiary of Honda Motor
Corporation, for bringing the requisite technology in the country. This
collaboration is still going strong. In year 2005, ACTIS CAPITAL LLC UK, a
leading private Equity firm invested in Sandhar
Technologies limited as a minority stake. In the year 2006, Sandhar
acquired one of its competitors based in South of India with notable presence
with India’s 3rd largest motorcycle manufacturer. In the year
2007, Sandhar acquired a niche auto component
supplier based in Barcelona, Spain. This was Sandhar’s
first overseas acquisition. |
Elections of the office
bearers of Executive Body of Thapar University Alumni Association for term
2010-2012 A meeting for the election of the office
bearers of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of T U Alumni Association for
a two year term 2010-2012 was held on 30/01/2010 in the committee room,
Thapar University, Patiala. The following have been elected unanimously:
The dinner started at 9:00 pm along with an
arrangement of a DJ-cum-ghazal programme. The alumni revived their memories of their
golden days at T U by dancing till midnight. All the alumni were charged with
old memories and in the end their trip to the institute was a memorable
experience for them and their families.
Dancing to the DJ tunes Re-Union of the Golden Jubilee Entrant “1959-63
batch” The Thapar University Alumni Association also organised Re-union of “Golden Jubilee entrant “1959-63
batch” function on Saturday, the 14th of November 2009 in the University
campus. The function started at 2:30 pm with the registration process and
afterwards tour of the campus, which revived their old memories. All were
also present at the time of Group photograph. Later after evening tea,
felicitation of the alumni started. Nearly 17 alumni from this batch, were presented to the Chief Guest Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee, Director,
Thapar University and each of them with his family was honoured
by inviting them to the stage and giving them a shawl and a memento. The
photographs of the alumni of this batch at the time of their admission in the
institute were also displayed. The dinner started at 9:00 pm along with an
arrangement of a Ghazal Programme and fireworks
display.
1959-63 batch alumni Scholarships
& Special Prizes Thapar University Alumni
Association Executive Committee has recommended Mr. Rakshak Vohra, BE final year
student s/o. Er.
K K Vohra (BE-102/67) and Mr. Sahil Garg, BE-2nd
year s/o Er. Mani Kant Garg (BE-31/79)
for alumnus ward scholarships, amounting to Rs. 50,000/- per semester, for the academic year
2009-10.

University: 23rd Convocation of Thapar University
was held on 23rd November, 2009 at T U Campus. At this
convocation, a total of 986 degrees were awarded: 21 Ph.D.
, 213 M. E. , 4 PG Diploma, 87 M.Sc., 13 M. Phil, 110 MBA, 58 MCA and
483 B.E/ B. Tech. During this convocation, a total of 28 students
received/medals awards for their outstanding and meritorious academic,
scholastic and all-round performance also. The Distinguished Alumni Award was given to Mr. Jayant Davar of 1980-84 batch.

progress This wholly owned subsidiary Company in Spain
enjoys 20% Global market share for its products – Aluminium
die cast parts for vehicle restraint systems and wiper systems. Same year,Sandhar also established, a wholly owned subsidiary
named PT Sandhar Indonesia in Jakarta for supplying
auto components to one of its reputed existing customers, which is a leading
OEM. In slightly more than 2 decades, Sandhar has grown to a moderately sized operation with
more than 3500 employees and a presence in 3 continents across 21
manufacturing plants. In an industry that changes constantly, in terms of
both technology & products, Sandhar has stood
out from its struggling early days to its current status as a major player in
the field of auto parts manufacturing. The group under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Davar,
currently has 18 manufacturing facilities across India, one in Spain and one
in Indonesia. The group uses almost all the major technologies of manufacturing,
which are at the technological forefront in India, using State of the art
production equipment, resulting in a product quality in the lead ahead of its
business rivals. It is also considered as highly reliable single source JIT
(just-in-time) supplier to most of its existing customers. Sandhar operates on a basis of the continuous pursuit of technological
advancement, and employs up to date technology to create a congenial working
environment matching its human centered management approach. The success of Sandhar is based on the principles set up by Mr. Jayant Davar, of creating a
brand name and first class products, and providing excellent product and
service through scientific management. The global customers of Sandhar
group include Hero Honda motorcycles, Honda Siel cars,
TATA motors, Ashoka Leyland, John Deere, Lombardini, Siemens,
Electrolux-Canada, ABB India, Walter Germany, Suzuki, Yamaha Motors to
name a few. Mr. Davar has been
actively involved in several professional bodies as chairman –CII (Haryana
council), President HSCI suppliers club, Chairman ACMA, CII-Northern region.
He is currently President automotive component manufacturers association of
India. Mr. Davar and Sandhar today are a case study at Harvard Business
School, being taught to Management graduates. |
